Waterbird Rookery/Pyrotechnics Disturbance Assessment

In 2001 and 2002, we assessed the level of disturbance from the Fourth of July pyrotechnics display on the heron/egret rookery on Indian Island in Humboldt Bay, CA. We determined the extent of nestling mortality, if any, caused by the pyrotechnics, as well as a population estimate of birds at the rookery. We also presented this research at the 2002 Humboldt Bay and Watershed Symposium at the request of City of Eureka.
