Before
co-founding MGW Biological Surveys, Mourad Gabriel conducted many
kinds of biological investigations throughout northern California.
He worked for California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) creating
the primary nest site database for peregrine falcons in Humboldt,
Del Norte and western Trinity counties on both public and private
lands using GIS. He also helped establish the CDFG North
Coast Region protocol for determining peregrine falcon nest site
status. He also worked for the California
Cooperative Fishery Research Unit on many research projects including coho and chinook salmon spawner surveys, coho salmon mark-recapture
experiments and population estimates through e-fishing and seining,
and drift analysis. Mourad conducted Marbled Murrelet and Spotted
Owl surveys in the King Range National Conservation Area for the
Bureau of Land Management. He also conducted white-footed vole surveys
and habitat analysis for CDFG.
Mourad spent several months volunteering
for various projects such as harbor seal pup surveys and exotic
plant removal on USFWS Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge, assisting
in snowy plover nest searches for the Arcata USFWS office, and assisting in data collection
for a large-scale study of Roosevelt elk in Sinkyone Wilderness
State Park, in Mendocino County, CA. Mourad worked as an assistant
museum curator mounting and preparing mammal and bird specimens
for natural habitat displays and student instruction at Humboldt
State University and also worked as a professional taxidermist in
Fresno, CA.
Mourad is an active member of the Wildlife Disease Association,
Wildlife
Society national, western and north coast chapters, American
Society of Mammalogists, Society for Vector Ecology, and Society for
Conservation Biology. He was past president of the Wildlife Disease
Club at Humboldt State University and was recently nominated as an
candidate for the 2007 Wildlife Society Wildlife Disease working
group. He is also a trained Basic Supervisor for the Oiled
Wildlife Care Network.
Mourad is currently pursuing a Ph.D at the University of
California Davis where he is researching the population health and
conservation of Pacific fishers in California focusing on their
potential population limiting pathogenic exposures. Mourad's certifications
include, California Department of Fish and Game Wildlife Handling
and Restraint, CPR and First Aid, Defensive Driving, ATV Safety Institute
training, and OSPR Hazard Communications. Mourad's hobbies include
backpacking, bodyboarding, taxidermy and angling. |
